When Eric Patterson’s Mum takes in an alien who is on the run from the Government he doesn’t realise they have a day to save the world. With the Russians, Americans and Belgians after them, things are about to get very hairy indeed!
From the Author:
Although PLAYING HOOKY is a book of fiction, many of its pages tell the story of me and my brother, Dan. Yes, we did attend parochial school, and while growing up we did live in Baba and Zedo's house along with our Uncle Tom. We never played hooky, and I certainly would never advise it, but the incident at the creek where Danny was injured is completely accurate. Sadly, our dad did die in a work-related accident when we were very young, and our mother was left alone to raise her two children. There are many funny situations sprinkled throughout PLAYING HOOKY as well. My brother and I always teased each other, but deep down, although we never said it, we loved each other very much.

The miller Elmo and his son Mort have a problem—instead of standing up for what they know is right, they follow everyone else’s opinions. When a farmer complains that Elmo is overworking the donkey, Elmo and Mort mill the grain. When others complain that his prices are too high, Elmo reduces the price, even if he’s losing money. When a friend suggests Mort steal apples with him, Mort goes along with the plan.
Their trouble worsens when they take their donkey to sell at the market and listen to all the advice they hear along the way. By trying to please everyone, they end up pleasing no one and losing their donkey. This retelling of Aesop’s classic fable illustrates that the path to success means standing up for what is right.
